On Tuesday January 30, 2024 the European Commission carried out unannounced inspections in several companies active in the tyres industry. The Commission has concerns that the inspected companies may have violated EU antitrust rules that prohibit cartels and restrictive business practices.1 If so, you might have overpaid on tyres purchases in the past.
The inspections took place in the sector leading companies – including names like Pirelli, Continental, Michelin or Nokian Tyres – and they were focusing on new replacement tyres for passenger cars, vans, trucks, and buses sold in the European Economic Area.
In Europe, the cartel allegedly formed through public earnings calls where tire manufacturers discussed pricing. The Commission is investigating whether sensitive information was shared and if trade associations were involved in price coordination.
